Riverford's Travelling Yurt

Guy Watson approached Yurts for Life in 2009 with the idea of taking a large yurt on the road as a travelling version of Riverford Organics famous Field Kitchen. The yurt was made from ash from Tor Hill on the Riverford estate only half a mile from our Landscove workshop. The wood actually arrived as tree boles and was sawn into planks by a mobile sawmill outside the workshop. Its next journey was as a finished yurt so its carbon footprint could only be seen with a powerful magnifying glass.

The Riverford crew were trained in the erection of this large (33 foot diameter) structure which they would have to put up and down many times in the summer of 2010. They even made a video of us putting it up as a guide. The yurt restaurant then went on tour across England, calling at WOMAD, Peterborough, Yorkshire and London as well as other venues in a non-stop programme, serving organic meals to thousands of customers. The yurt was a great hit too with many reporting that the cosy environment added considerably to the experience of consuming delicious freshly-prepared food. For more details of this project visit the Riverford Organic website. If you missed the 2010 tour, all is not lost, the travelling restaurant will be on the move again in the Summer of 2012.
